The culture course gave a great insight as to how Japanese society has been operating and how each individual plays a role in it.

Milla from Fall 2022

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I loved the field trips especially to Kamakura and the shows like Noh and Kyogen and Bunraku. I also got to participate in the Japanese traditional tea ceremony club which I love so much. All these activities and experiences outside of the classroom helped me in my studies inside the classroom.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I loved learning about the history of Japan during the lectures before we went on our tours. It was interesting to learn how things were started then developed into what we know today. Most of the topics we've covered this semester were very interesting to me although lectures on a Saturday morning was a bit tough.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

I used Quizlet a lot and a Japanese dictionary online. The special sessions class does help at lot especially the ones right before the final.

What did you find most valuable in the Culture Course?

The culture course gave a great insight as to how Japanese society has been operating and how each individual plays a role in it. I really got to see the background of Japan through their philosophy, history, and practices. It helps to learn Japanese when you understand the culture behind the language.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

Kcp is not some sort of small school put together by a few teachers. There are many students from all over the world and many professional teachers. When they say intensive, they mean it. Homework takes a good chunk of time and you will be dragging to go to class some days. But you really do learn a lot in a short amount of time.
