Tokyo to Host the 2020 Olympics
At 5 a.m. on Sept. 8 in Japan, thousands of Japanese burst out with joy upon hearing that Tokyo won the bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. In Buenos Aires, as International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge announced the winning host country for the 2020 Olympics, he described Tokyo as a “safe pair of hands,” Japan’s capital highlighted their unquestionable financial resources and solid track record for delivering on promises, which ultimately convinced the IOC judges to award them the hosting bid. This is certainly a triumph, not only for Japan, but for Asia’s dynamic economies, and a bright future in the sporting world.

The Olympic Games are held every four years with Summer and Winter Games staged separately. Athletes all around the world go through rigorous training for years in preparation for the leading international sporting event. The Olympic Games include many different competitions. Our modern-day Olympics was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century B.C. until the 4th century A.D. The IOC was founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin and, as of today, the governing body of the Olympic movement, along with the Olympic Charter, defines its foundation and authority.

The Japanese Olympic Committee was created in 1911. Japan began participating in the Olympic Games in 1912 and has continued competing regularly. Japan was part of the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The country has hosted the Olympics on three previous occasions: the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. Japan won its first medals in 1920 and gold medals followed in 1928. Japanese athletes have won about 398 medals at the Summer Olympic Games and about 37 medals at the Winter Olympic Games.
Tokyo already has around $4.5 billion in reserve bank funds to build stadiums for the Olympic Games, solidifying their financial stability.
Japan’s financial might and its firm presence in Asia proved to be irresistible. The 2020 Summer Olympic Games will surely be a spectacle anticipated by the world.
